TINEA (FUNGAL) INFECTION

Fungal infection of skin is of various types/causes, but commonest type is tinea infection.
Why it is important to discuss about this infection?
Because this infection has reached epidemic proportion in INDIA. Skin OPDS of hospitals are filled with tinea infection patients.
When there is epidemic of dengue or swine flu, everybody talks about, news channels are filled with it because these diseases are deadly. But nobody is bothered about tinea infection.
Why it is cause of concern?
Increasing resistant of this infection to antifungal drugs has become cause of concern.
Exact reason for resistance is unknown but most important reason is use of steroid based creams, oral and injectable steroids. These steroids cause temporary relief in itching but suppress body immunity leading to increased fungal growth, some of which become resistant to treatment with time.
Another concern is increasing infection in children and even infants.
What are types of Tinea infection?
Tinea corporis- tinea infection of body
Tinea cruris- groin
Tinea capitis- scalp and hairs
Tinea pedis and mannum- foot and hands
Tinea unguim – nail infection
Symptoms and signs
•	Redness, itching and scaling with ring like lesions
•	Patch of hair loss in case of scalp infection
•	Thick and discolored nails
Treatment
•	Most important is to seek treatment early, as it is to treat fungus in early stage when infection is limited
•	Take treatment from skin specialist only, as in today scenario with expanding knowledge only specialists are well versed in their respective fields. A physician has only little knowledge about skin diseases.
•	Oral and topical antifungal drugs are required, due to increasing resistance some antifungal may not work in some patients and also drugs may need to be taken for as long 2 to 3 months.
•	Don’t self-medicate don’t take medicine from chemist shop without doctor consultation as pharmacist don’t have knowledge and experience of doctor to diagnose and treat a disease.
Prevention
•	Regular bathing and cleaning of body.
•	Don’t wear wet clothes.
•	Take shower after any physical activity which leads to sweating
•	Don’t wear tight clothes
•	Don’t share clothes, undergarments, towels, soap with infected person
•	Laundry of clothes of infected person should be done separate and clothes should be dried in sunlight for atleast 2 hrs.
•	Eat healthy food and drink plenty of water to boost immunity
